What is the SSI Open Water Diver program and how does it work?

With the SSI Open Water Diver course, you obtain the first diving license that allows you to dive independently up to 18 meters deep, accompanied by a buddy with the same or higher certification. 

This means you no longer need an active instructor or divemaster to accompany you.

The course is scheduled for 3 days…

The course is structured into 3 segments:

Theory part

You can complete the theory portion at home or anywhere you choose, at your own pace, using the SSI digital study kit accessed through the My SSI App.

You’ll have all the tools necessary for learning: manuals, videos, knowledge reviews, quizzes, and exams. This flexibility allows you the option to focus your time at the center solely on the practical aspects of the course, thus maximizing your vacation time.

Over six chapters, you will delve into the essential foundations of diving.

  • From learning how to properly use equipment and safety rules to understanding how your body responds in the underwater environment.
  • Additionally, you’ll learn the importance of having a diving buddy, effective dive planning, and how to handle potential emergency situations.
  • You’ll discover vital techniques such as pressure equalization and how to maintain control underwater.

With this solid foundation, you will prepare yourself to dive into the crystal-clear waters of Lanzarote and any ocean, exploring rich marine biodiversity with confidence.

Confined waters session

During the confined water session of the SSI Open Water course, you’ll dive into a controlled environment, ideal for safe and calm learning. Guided by your instructor’s expertise, you will master every crucial aspect of diving.

  • Equipment configuration: You’ll learn to set up and adjust your diving equipment, ensuring everything is ready for your dives.
  • Underwater breathing: You will practice essential techniques for proper breathing using the regulator, including how to clear it if necessary.

To participate in the SSI Open Water Diver course, you must meet the following conditions:

  • Minimum age: You must be at least 10 years old.
  • Swimming skills: You need to know how to swim, though you don’t need to be an excellent swimmer.
  • Medical evaluation: You must complete a medical questionnaire.

No, you don’t need a medical certificate to enroll. You simply need to complete a health questionnaire. If you answer “yes” to any questions on the form, then a medical certificate will be required.

No, it’s not necessary.

You can complete all the theoretical parts, including quizzes and exams, wherever you prefer through the MySSI App.

We’re also available to answer any questions you may have.

Yes, you can learn to dive.

As divers, we use fins and a buoyancy control device, so it’s not necessary to be a perfect swimmer.

However, there’s a swimming test to ensure you’re comfortable in the water.

You need to float for 10 minutes and swim 200 meters or snorkel 300 meters. Overall, it’s important to be comfortable in the water and in good health.

The course consists of two parts: confined water exercises and open water practice. In total, the course runs for 1 afternoon and 2 mornings:

  • Afternoon: 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM.
  • Morning: 8:30 AM – 1:30 PM.

With this certification, you’re cleared to dive to depths of up to 18 meters, always accompanied by a buddy who holds the same level or higher certification.

Moreover, it serves as a gateway to various advanced SSI programs.

Both the PADI and SSI courses provide the same globally recognized certification and equivalent skills. However, there are differences in their training offerings that might interest you:

  • Study Platform: SSI offers a more versatile and intuitive online learning platform.
  • Manual Availability: SSI manuals are available in over 40 languages.
  • My SSI App: With SSI, you have access to an app where you can find your manuals, information about diving centers, dives, and a digital logbook to record your dives.

Yes, it’s advisable to book in advance.

The sooner, the better, ince spots are limited and we require ample time for proper planning.

SSI recommends waiting at least 24 hours after your last dive before flying.
